For this residential remodel / addition, the owners asked for natural lighting and ventilation to open the back of the house. They requested sensitivity to the Craftsman styling of the existing home and expressed an interest in the Japanese influence on the arts and crafts movement of the early 20th century.
The addition steps down, allowing for an easier relationship with the sloping back yard.
The geometry of the kitchen derives from the natural circulation flow, responds to the diagonal view across the backyard, and places the crescent shaped bar in a position that introduces the visitor at the front door to the dynamic rear addition.
Glulam beams, exposed in the Japanese tradition, allow for a floating roof structure, making operable clerestory windows possible all the way back to the original exterior wall of the house. This strategy maximizes natural lighting and ventilation for the entire back of the house.
Multiple functions are accommodated in the new space, including a two person kitchen and an informal gathering space, as well as a home office.
