The pergola pictured here first appeared as a rectangle of dashed lines on a landscaping plan drawn over 5 years ago. The patio sheltered by the pergola was completed three years later, and the pergola remained a dream until this year.
Designing the specifics of the pergola was a challenge, but the results are gratifying. The pergola complements the existing house. Connection of column base to concrete footing expresses structural forces while easing the visual transition from vertical column to horizontal ground plane. Recessed slots (reveals) accommodate steel plates in the long beams and establish a theme. Logical connections between the layered members provide no flat surfaces where water might sit and rot wood. And the finished product is fun.
It will be another three years before the climbing rose and clematis are extensive enough to provide dappled, organic shade. For now the linear weave of shadow and light is reminiscent of piano keys. But the pergola already delivers most of its intended function - more intimate, private spaces, an activated pathway, surfaces for fun and function, and whimsy.
