A dark stair along the back wall of the existing house inspired an addition celebrating the stair, dousing it with natural light from a 4' x 20' skylight. A glass floored bridge spans the skylight opening, connecting the old second floor with the new while allowing light to penetrate to the lower floor.
A new transparency interconnects house and garden where almost no connection had previously existed.
The predominantly modern aesthetic sensitively integrates quotations from historic forms and resulted in an award for excellence from the Historic Preservation Commission of Lexington.
